Gemini Gems for Basic Q&A

I don't hear as much about Google's AI offering - Gemini. It certainly doesn't have the hype that Claude or ChatGPT seem to bring with them. However, if you are already a Google Workspace customer, the native integrations into every day work are really nice. Not to mention, because its a first-party tool (vs a third-party tool like Claude), the risk for data leakage is reduced. I'll try to do a longer write up on Gemini (and the integration options) in the future but for now, here is a simple use-case.

I was helping a client built a very basic Gem for answering questions that their team might have based on documentation. This was way simpler than I imagined. I created the Gem, added the PDF knowledge files, tested and then saved the Gem. After it was saved it created a simple Google Drive folder which housed the Gem and associated Knowledge files. I could even share the Gem like any other Google Doc file and the recipient could use it (I also had to share the Knowledge files with the recipient).
I wouldn't use this Gem as a public facing tool, but for basic internal Q&A based on SOPs or internal docs - it was really slick. I would also add a disclaimer to the Description that says you need to verify any important details.

Key Takeaway:
If you are a Google Workspace customer, building a staff SOP Gem or similar Q&A AI tool, is really simple.
